The Diane Young Giving Tree

Dear RBUSD, Parras Family, and Friends,

Last weekend our former colleague, and dear friend, Diane Young announced to her social media friends that she has pancreatic cancer. Her prognosis isn’t good. Yet, she is handling this challenge, as she’s done with other tough moments of her life, with grace, courage and humor.

Diane is a giver. Just look around Parras Middle School and think of all the programs she initiated and the many lives she has positively impacted! Even after retiring in 2019, she continued to volunteer with her church, the Boy Scouts, and is the heart and soul of our Mock Trial Team.

But now our giver needs us. First, prayers, if you are so inclined.

Second, participation in The Diane Young Giving Tree Project.

Here’s how you can help:

1.  Write a note, card or letter to Diane and place it in the designated box below the staff mailbox. Consider including an inspiring poem, illustration or photo you might have of Diane. You can also to mail it to Diane Young, c/o Parras Middle School, 200 N. Lucia Ave., Redondo Beach CA. We have note cards available if you should need one.

2.  Videotape a message, song, memory, etc. and post it to: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfueUJnh9HXJuFN-cu1iUEtVF9Uwle9Pc63_U11FqyeBGg6AA/viewform?usp=sf_link

3.  Share a personalized, weather-resistant heart ornament that will be suspended from Diane’s Giving Tree. The ornaments, which will adore an outdoor tree, will serve as a reminder to Diane of our love and respect. Your heart can be handmade, purchased from Amazon, Etsy, etc., or we have two dozen metal hearts in the office for you to personalize. Our hope is that as Diane sits in her beautiful garden (the site of numerous staff parties), she’ll be assured of her profound impact on us.

Diane’s purpose in life is to give back, to make a positive difference. Now is our time to show her that she does.

We’d like to share this opportunity with as many former colleagues and Diane’s former students as we can. But, time is of the essence: Please share this email with anyone else you think might be interested in contributing. Submit your letters, videos and ornaments to Parras Middle School no later than February 10. Again, please contact CJ Shawver @ cshawver@rbusd.org or Janet Barker @ jabarker@rbusd.org if you have questions.

In closing, thank you for your participation. Your words, voice and creativity are certain to lift Diane’s spirit during these difficult days.

With much love and admiration,
Janet Barker, CJ Shawver and Gerel Santiago (retired Parras ELA teacher)
